Pitkin Community Center

This wonderful project was originally proposed by the WVIA in 1997. Our goal was to develop a long-term plan for the beautification of Wethersfield's Pitkin Community Center and to begin the execution of that plan in a meaningful way.

The WVIA hired the landscape architecture firm CR3 of Simsbury, Connecticut, to draw up a beautification plan. The plan, which was completed in 1998 and is now being followed, included proposed improvements to trees, planting of trees, planting beds, walkways, walkway lighting and more attractive entrances to the building.

The WVIA then set about raising money to pay for the first major phase of the plan, the planting of all trees that could be safely planted without interfering with future proposed construction. A total of 53 trees were purchased and planted around the Center's grounds in Spring, 2000. Many trees were purchased by Wethersfield citizens in honor or in memory of family members and friends. WVIA member John Lepper selected the trees and designated their exact placement. The town's Physical Services Department dug all the holes and planted and watered the trees. The appearance of the Pitkin Center will benefit from this project for many decades in the future.
